What is Openreach fibre broadband?

Openreach is the UK’s largest broadband network operator, covering around 32 million premises. Many providers use their infrastructure, but the experience you get depends on your provider.

At Home Unity, we focus on making broadband easy to understand, easy to join, and easy to manage. You get clear communication, simple choices, and support from real people.

Full fibre vs part fibre

Your address will likely have either full fibre coverage, part fibre coverage, or both. We’ll confirm what’s available when you check your postcode.

Full fibre

Full fibre means the connection runs all the way into your home using fibre optic cable. It’s the best option for speed, consistency, and future-proofing.

Best for

  • Busy homes with multiple users
  • Working from home and video calls
  • Streaming in HD or 4K
  • Homes that want the most consistent performance

Part fibre

Part fibre uses fibre to your local cabinet, then the final part comes through a copper line. It’s widely available and works well for many households, but speeds are limited.

Best for

  • Everyday streaming and browsing
  • One or two people online most of the time
  • Homes where full fibre is not yet available

Choose the right speed for your home

You don’t need the fastest package to get a great experience. You need a speed that matches how your household uses the internet, with enough headroom for busy times.

Frequently asked questions about Openreach broadband

Is Openreach full fibre available at my address?

It depends on your postcode. Some areas have Openreach full fibre, others have part fibre, and some have both. Check availability and we’ll confirm what your address can get.

Can I get speeds up to 1000Mbps on Openreach?

In areas with Openreach full fibre, speeds can go up to 1000Mbps depending on availability and package choice.

Do I need a phone line for Openreach broadband?

No. Part fibre uses the copper line for the final part of the connection, but you don't need a phone line. Full does not rely on the traditional copper line in the same way. We’ll confirm what applies at your address.

Do I need to contact my current provider?

No. Once you place your order, we handle the switch for you using Ofcom’s One Touch Switch process. We contact your existing provider, manage the switch and confirm your changeover date.

Will switching cause downtime?

In most cases, switching is smooth with minimal disruption. If anything is expected to affect your service, we’ll tell you in advance.

What if my needs change later?

If your broadband speed or home phone usage changes, you can speak to us and we will explain your options clearly. Our aim is to keep things flexible and easy, not to lock you into something that no longer fits.
